Southeast University held the 36th Antarctic expedition and the energy module departure ceremony for the Antarctic Taishan Station

[Southeast University News Network, Oct. 15] (Reporter: Tang Tang, photographer: Hang Tian) On October 15, Southeast University held the 36th Antarctic expedition and the energy module departure ceremony for the Antarctic Taishan Station (“SEU Pole Energy”) at the Sipailou Campus. Zhang Guangjun, President of Southeast University, Chief Accountant Ding Hui, principals from the CPC Publicity Department, the Scientific Research Institute, School of Automation, School of Energy and Environment, and Zhongda Hospital, etc., the 36th Antarctic expedition team members of Southeast University, who are going to the Antarctic Pole for scientific researches, including Fang Shixiong, Liu Xichui, Wu Changde and their family members, teacher’s and student’s representatives from the departments concerned attended the ceremony.

Zhang Xiaobing, Deputy Dean of the Scientific Research Institute, presided over the ceremony. Wei Haikun, Executive Dean of the School of Automation, reported the project development on behalf of the project team. He introduced that Southeast University has been engaged in the Antarctic expedition for more than a decade. “SEU Pole Energy”, as an important part of the China Antarctic Princess Elizabeth Expedition Station (Taishan Station), will last from September 2018 to April 2020. The Energy Module (SEU Pole Energy) at the Antarctic Taishan Station will supply power to the scientific research facilities at Taishan Station during the unattended period and remotely monitor the operation of Taishan Station via satellite.

Prof. Shen Jiong, Former Vice President of Southeast University and Professor of the School of Energy and Environment, talked about the history of the Antarctic expedition of Southeast University, and especially recalled the life of Prof. Hao Yingli who died at Yangpachen, Tibet for the Antarctic expedition in 2010. Prof. Shen Jiong said that scientific researchers of Southeast University have always considered the country’s prosperity as their own responsibility. In order to break the monopoly of foreign technologies, they have contributed themselves to hard work and even their precious life. He said that Southeast University would continue to contribute to the Antarctic expedition in terms of integrated energy system in the future.


Ding Hui made a speech in combination with his Antarctic expedition. He said that “getting renowned with science and serving the country with talents” is SEU’s initial aspiration and the mission. The school has been always actively participating in the national major strategies. The Antarctic expedition highlights a very long journey and various problems that may be encountered in the way. Ding Hui put forward three expectations: first of all, he expected that all the team members could overcome difficulties and guarantee smooth operation of the facilities at Taishan Station to accomplish this expedition; secondly, he would appreciate the family members for their great support of this expedition. He expected that the leaders of all units could concern their families from various perspectives. Thirdly, he expected that everyone could keep in mind Mr. Li Ruiqing’s edification of “getting used to poor life for great accomplishments”, appreciate the contributions made by predecessors of SEU for the purpose of national independence, national freedom and scientific development. He expected more SEU scientists to make great contributions to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

Fang Shixiong spoke on behalf of the expedition team that he would resolutely follow the management of the temporary CPC of the expedition team and the temporary Party branch of Taishan Station during the expedition in order to be a qualified expedition team member. He also said that the energy module of Taishan Station would be one of the key assignments of the Antarctic expedition. He would install and debug the system together with his teammate Liu Xichui to guarantee stable energy support to the Antarctic Taishan Station. Doctor Wu Changde would provide medical support for the inland members while undertaking national research program of monitoring the member’s physical conditions. Fang Shixiong declared on behalf of his teammates that all the members would carry forward SEU’s spirit of “striving for perfection”, work hard, be kind to teammates, pay attention to their health, let the school and their family members to feel relieved, and return safely.

Subsequently, Zhang Guangjun, Ding Hui, Shen Jiong, Wei Haikun, Fang Shixiong, Liu Xichui and Wu Changde, etc. jointly fasten the departure belt on the “SEU Pole Energy” facility for the “Snow Dragon” Polar Expedition Ship. Zhang Guangjun solemnly granted the school flag of Southeast University to the Antarctic expedition team members and took a joint photo with the team members and their families. He appreciated the family members for their great support of the school’s work and the Antarctic expedition, and asked the team members to concern their health.

It is reported that the media inside and outside the school have repeatedly reported on the South Pole energy supply module provided by Southeast University. On this Sep. 23, the official WeChat of Southeast University issued a “collection order” regarding the module’s name, logo and appearance, which has attracted widespread attentions and contributions. Afterwards, the name of “SEU Pole Energy” was drafted by a project team teacher and an extramural enthusiast, and the name then stood out from dozens of options and finally identified as the module name. The icon as selected can not only reflect the polar features but SEU elements. A group of penguins on the icon full of vitality and vitality represent the vigorous development of the Antarctic expedition in China; the lightning sign on the icon highlights the high performance of the South Pole energy supply module provided by Southeast University, reflecting its powerful power generation and storage functions.
