On May 27, the conclusion and review meeting of the major consulting research project of the Chinese Academy of Engineering: “Study on the Sustainable Development Strategy of Urban Construction in China” was held at Sipailou Campus of Southeast University. Zhang Guangjun, President of Southeast University, attended the meeting; in addition, nearly 100 persons including 14 review academician experts and project academician experts, namely, Cheng Taining, Qian Qihu, He Jingtang, Xie Lili, Pan Yunhe, Jiang Yi, Xiao Xuwen, Ding Lieyun, Lu Chunfang, Wang Jianguo, Zhang Jianyun, Miao Changwen, Wu Zhiqiang and Yang Zhifeng, etc. as well as principals in charge of urban construction and other departments attended the meeting.

The meeting in the morning was presided over by Prof. Cheng Taining and Prof. Wang Jianguo from the School of Architecture of Southeast University and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Zhang Guangjun, Zhou Lan, Director of the Department of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of Jiangsu Province, Academician Zhang Jianyun, Director of the Department of Civil Engineering, Water Resources and Architecture of the Chinese Academy of Engineering addressed the meeting in succession. President Zhang Guangjun, on behalf of the school, extended his welcome and gratitude to the academicians and experts present in the meeting. He said that the project research was of great significance and highlighted extremely high-level standards. The project team has contributed great wisdom and efforts to the final conclusion. He believed that the project achievements would definitely provide important preference for decision-making on the sustainable development of Chinese cities and exert significant and far-reaching impacts on Chinese urban construction in the new era. Zhou Lan pointed out in his speech that the project achievements would not only affect the the decision-making on urban construction and development in China, but also be used by the urban construction leaders and the frontline planners. Zhang Jianyun, in his speech, looked into the future how to utilize the project achievements to the utmost.

Cheng Taining reported on the research of the whole project, including the project proposal, the research characteristic, the project progress and the research achievements, etc.. Wang Jianguo delivered a general report on the project and introduced the consultation achievements that the project has initially completed. Afterwards Academician Wu Zhiqiang from Tongji University, Prof. Yang Junyan from Southeast University, Academician Yang Zhifeng from Beijing Normal University, Prof. Wu Zhishen from Southeast University, Prof. Wang Wei from Southeast University, Prof. Liu Jiahong from China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research, and Academician Ding Lieyun from Huazhong University of Science and Technology reported the research achievements of seven topics in succession.

The meeting in the afternoon was presided over by He Jingtang, the review team leader and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Project Consultant Pan Yunhe, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Project consultant experts Qian Qihu and Xie Lili, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, highly appraised the project research and put forward their opinions and suggestions on the project. In addition, the experts of the review team made speeches in succession and reviewed the project achievements.

The review team pointed out the project achievements of three major systems, specifically, the value system that guides the sustainable development of urban construction in China based on the basic consensus framework of the world sustainable development, the inheritance of outstanding Chinese culture and the response to the leading changes in contemporary science and technology; the development strategic system of typical professional fields in relation to the sustainable development of urban construction; the implementation guarantee system regarding the sustainable development strategy of urban construction. The project research highlights strategic, forward-looking, comprehensive and innovative features, especially achieving significant breakthroughs in problem-oriented research thinking and interdisciplinary research. The achievements will provide important strategic and technical support for the sustainable development of urban construction in China so as to promote the healthy and orderly development of urban construction in the socialism new era with Chinese characteristics.

“The Study on the Sustainable Development Strategy of Urban Construction in China”, as a major counseling researchproject initiated by the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2017, closely targeted the noticeable problems and strategic demands in urban construction under the background of “new-type urbanization”, analyzed and summarized the problems and experience in the course of urban construction both at home and abroad, and elaborated on the new demands and new aspirations of current social and economic development to the urban construction. Besides, this project initiatedfrom establishing the system of sustainable development value emphasizing on both science and humanity, thus proposed the selection of core strategy regarding the sustainable development of urban construction in China inconsideration of urban space development, protection of environmental resources, infrastructure construction, optimization of transportation development mode, calamity reduction and prevention for the safety purpose, and implementation of the guarantee system, etc.. Upon studies for over two years, all the research work has been accomplished.

The project leaders include Cheng Taining and Wang Jianguo, the project consultant is Pan Yunhe, the research team covers nearly 300 experts from a dozen of institutions including major universities, research institutes and enterprises, etc. engaged in urban construction under the leadership of 26 academicians respectively from the Department of Civil Engineering, Water Resources and Architecture, the Department of Environment and Textile Engineering, the Department of Information and Electronic Engineering, and the Department of Engineering Management, etc. under the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
