On the morning of June 3rd, 2017, Southeast University, founded in 1902 as Sanjiang Normal School, celebrated her 115th anniversary. Professor Yi Hong, Secretary of the Southeast University CPC Committee, was the host of the celebration conference. Attendants at the conference included: Zhang Guangjun, President of SEU and other school leaders, Honorary Professor of SEU, the well-known physicist and Nobel Prize Winner Samuel Chao Chung Ting and his spouse Susan Ting, Zhou Xuhong, President of Chongqing University as well as more than a thousand staff and students of SEU.
Zhang Guangjun addressed the conference with the report named “On the Road to World-Class University”. In the report, he reviewed the history of SEU. and stated that Southeast University has gone through a glorious history of 115 years, during which we have adhered to the university spirit of “sincerity, practicality and striving for perfection”, nurtured batches of top-quality talents for our country, made remarkable research achievements, and have made marvelous contributions in serving local economic construction and social development. In terms of the revitalization and innovation of Chinese culture, We have also done a perfect job. We are qualified to announce that we have built an internationally famous high-level research university. “sincerity, practicality” guarantees SEU to be sure footed on its way to ideal. While “striving for perfection” is quoted by SEUers to encourage and motivate themselves. Since there is no earthly “perfection”, the pursuit of the SEUers is therefore without end. In order to achieve the “1-10-100” SEU dream, SEUers will forge ahead to contribute to a world-class university.
In President (Chongqing University) Zhou Xuhong’s speech, he reviewed that about 80 years ago, National Central University and Chongqing University worked together and built a high ground of China’s education. During that period, the two schools shared the teachers and teaching resources and implemented mutual recognition of credit. Both teaching and research received fruitful results. He pointed out that the older generation of intellectuals of National Central University loved the country deeply, and they struggled to advocate science and pursue the truth during the war. It’s this spirit that supported the development of China’s higher education and inherited the culture in the war. He said that Chongqing University was willing to join Southeast University to carry forward the spirit of the Westward, deepening the cooperation with Southeast University and promoting the construction of world-class universities with Chinese characteristics hand in hand.
Representatives of alumni, faculty and students also made speeches and expressed their best wishes on the day to be memorized. At the end of the celebration conference, everyone stood up and sing the school song together.
