Professor Zhong Xunzheng, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering

Zhong Xunzheng, male, professor, PhD supervisor, born in Wugang City, Hunan Province in 1929, graduated from the Department of Architecture of Nanjing University (currently the School of Architecture of Southeast University), once taught at Hunan University and Wuhan University in succession, and has been teaching at the Department of Architecture of Nanjing Institute of Technology (currently Southeast University). He was elected as academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering in November 1997. Currently, he is serving as Chairman of the Architectural Society of China, Honorary Chairman of Chinese Institute of Architects and Vice Chairman of Jiangsu Civil Engineering Society.

Academician Zhong Xunzheng, as one of the academic leaders of Southeast University’s architecture discipline, played an important role in undertaking the scholarly research spirit of Mr. Yang Tingbao, the architectural educator of the older generation. In the field of architectural education, “Zheng Yang Qing Team”(jointly established by Professor Zhong Xunzheng, Professor Sun Zhongyang and Professor Wang Wenqing) established the style highlighting rigorous scholarship, democratic academy and supporting the younger generation in teaching and scientific research. The co-authored Architectural Drawing with Professor Zhong Xunzheng as the lead author won the first prize for outstanding textbook by the Ministry of Construction in 1996. Among his several works including Architectural Drawing - Environmental Expression and Techniques, Atlas of Foreign Architectural Decoration Structure and Footprint-Architectural Creation and Performance, etc., three have been published overseas.

In terms of architectural design and creation, he has been tirelessly searching advanced foreign experience and techniques as well as new approaches of practice under the social and cultural background in China. In 1958, he collaborated with Beijing Institute of Industrial Architectural Design to design Beijing Railway Station. His comprehensive program (façade) and the bridgehead of Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge designed in the 1960s were all completed upon designed by Premier Zhou Enlai. After the 1980s, among the finished projects in which he took charge of the conceptual design and cooperated with Professors Sun Zhongyang and Wang Wenqing (“Zheng Yang Qing Team”), the new building of Wuxi Taihu Hotel won the first prize issued by the State Education Commission and the second prize for outstanding design issued by the Ministry of Construction and the “Contemporary Chinese Architectural Art Creation Achievement Award” in the 20th World Architecture Conference convened by the International Association for Construction; Lanzhou Gansu Painting Academy and Hainan Sanya Jinling Resort won the second prize issued by the State Education Commission; in addition, Hangzhou Huqing Yutang Baoji Tourism Center won the first place in the design competition. In recent years, his primary works include Jialin Building at Sun Plaza of Dr. Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, Dongyuan Hotel, Nanjing Carnival Leisure Center, Nanjing Hunan Road Phoenix Building and Nanjing Shanxi Road Jinshan Building. The main architectural designs, accomplished by him together with his collaborator Professor Wang Wenqing as well as his graduate students include State Guest Hotel and Comprehensive Building of Dongjiao Hotel at Dr. Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum scenic area, Suzhou Tongli Lake Resort, the planning of Jingdezhen Old Town District (Museum Area) and Zhejiang Hangzhou Huali Jiangnan Watertown Residential Area, etc.. In 2003, he took charge of the façade design of the comprehensive building of General Hospital of Nanjing Military Region. Meanwhile, he, in cooperation with others, also designed Hongze Culture and Art Center, the planning and the individual building design of Jiuquhua Street, Xingcun Town, Wuyishan.

Academician Zhong Xunzheng has been engaged in architectural education and scientific research for over 50 years and cultivated more than 100 doctoral or graduate students. He is now concurrently employed as Honorary Professor by Harbin Institute of Technology. His architectural drawings have been selected for architectural drawing exhibitions in China for several times. 16 of them have been published in the first four national architectural drawing exhibitions.

His paperMy Humble Opinions about Architecture in Beijing was awarded as the international outstanding paper in the international exchange and appraisal activity as convened by the World Chinese Exchange Association and the World Culture and Art Research Center.
