Wei Yu, female, professor, PhD supervisor, born in February 1940, graduated from the Department of Radio Engineering of Nanjing Institute of Technology (currently Southeast University) in 1961 with the Bachelor’s Degree and then graduated from the Department of Electronic Engineering of Nanjing Institute of Technology with the Master’s Degree in 1965. In 1979, she studied further in West Germany and was granted the Doctoral Degree of Engineering by RWTH Aachen in 1981. In addition, she was also the first Chinese person who won Bocher Medal. Meanwhile, she was titled as Honorary Doctor by eight universities in U. S., U. K., Canada, Japan, Hong Kong and Australia, etc. She served as the first Department Head, Associate Dean and Dean of the Department of Biomedical Engineering of Nanjing Institute of Technology, Vice President and President of Southeast University in succession from 1985 to 1993. In November 1994, she was elected as one of the first batch of academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering. From 1993 to 2002, she served as Deputy Director of the State Education Commission and Vice Minister of the Ministry of Education of P. R. C.. Currently, she is serving as Director of the Learning Sciences Research Institute of Southeast University, Vice Chairman of the Chinese Institute of Electronics, Vice Chairman of China Association for Science and Technology, and Deputy Director of National Committee for Science, Education and Culture of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

Academician Wei Wei has long been engaged in microwave electronics researches. She has been involved in theoretical and applied researches on bioelectronics and molecular electronics since 1982, and has obtained the first batch of sectional images of microwave CT, ultrasound CT, diffraction CT and B/A nonlinear parameters of biological tissues in China. She established the first laboratory for molecular and bioelectronics in China and created the first bioelectronics doctoral program in China. Internationally, she took the initiative in illuminating the basic features of molecular devices and molecular computing system in a systematical manner, and took the lead of adopting the molecular design of molecular devices, which was highly concerned by experts both at home and abroad.

Wei Yu, as one of the first twelve executive directors of the International Society for Molecular Electronics and Biocomputing System, a standing member or a member of the Editorial Board of such international academic journals as “Biosystem” and “Molecular Engineering” etc., has published nearly 300 academic papers on authoritative academic journals both at home and abroad, and has in succession cultivated dozens of graduates, doctoral and postdoctoral fellows. Meanwhile, more than a dozen of national-level major and key scientific research assignments of which she took charge have been accomplished. Among others, she was conferred the Outstanding Individual Award for National Scientific and Technological Tackling, the Project Research Award, the Second Prize of Award for Progress in Science and Technology by the State Education Commission for four times, and the Third Prize for Progress in Science and Technology by the State Education Commission for five times. During her serving as Vice Minister of the Ministry of Education, she played an important role in promoting the construction of education network and the development of distance education in China.
